FAQs

Commonly asked questions... and answers!

How long will the appointment be?

This depends on the horse but will generally be anywhere between 45 minutes and 2 hours. For a smaller animal it can be between 20 minutes to an hour.

Do I need to do anything before the appointment?

The law has recently changed making it much more straightforward for complementary therapists to treat animals - the new ruling is that only if your horse or pet is currently under veterinary care for an illness or injury will you need to phone your vet for verbal permission for me to treat them, complying with the complementary treatment section of the 1966 Veterinary Surgeons Act. If your animal is not currently receiving veterinary treatment this is no longer necessary.

Does my horse have to be in a stable or tied up?

Again, this depends on the horse and the treatment. For Reiki I tend to work with horses loose in the stable or in the field (if it's not raining). For massage the horse will be loosely tied either in the yard or stable.

Does my horse have to be groomed before the appointment?

This isn't necessary, but it is necessary, especially for massage that s/he is dry and mud-free.

Are you insured?

Yes, I have Professional Liability Insurance through Balens Ltd.

What qualifications do you have?

Please visit the Why Kate? page to see details of my qualifications and CPD.

What after-care is advised?

For both Reiki and Massage it is advised not to ride (or lunge) for a day or two after the treatment and to provide plenty of fresh water and ad-lib forage. This is because the horse's system will still be adjusting to the effects of the treatment and in the case of Reiki, the energy will carry on healing for the next day or so after the treatment.

After a massage it is advisable to work up to full exercise gradually over a few days.

For other animals, plenty of fresh water should be available and they should have no strenuous activity (dogs, for example, should not have a long walk) the next day.

Will there be a charge for travel?

This depends on where you are based, but if there is I keep it to a minimum and will quote for this before the treatment.

Do you discount for yard visits?

Yes - how much I discount depends on the number of horses I am to treat and will be agreed with you prior to the visit.
